** UPDATE ** The GECA CSX Committee has decided to not hold a demonstration at this event. We will have someone there to discretely see what MDOT/MTA/CSX are saying, but not try to challenge their message at this time.

The residents were protesting the process which is considering relocating a rail/truck freight facility from Dundalk, MD to a site in Elkridge & Hanover, MD which has over 360 homes within 1/4 mile of the proposed facility. The protest was able to get coverage from web, print, and television media.

Follow-up to Protest at Congressman Sarbanes Meeting May 18

Elkridge, MD, May 18, 2011 - Several Elkridge residents wore their red shirts and brought their signs out to protest Congressman Sarbanes' position regarding the inclusion of Elkridge / Hanover, MD as a potential site for the CSX Intermodal rail freight facility which is being moved from Dundalk, MD to a location south of Baltimore. To his credit, Mr. Sarbanes took time away from his scheduled meeting with senior citizens at the Elkridge Senior Center and he spent 15 minutes with the protesting residents, to discuss their concerns.
Prior to the meeting, Mr. Sarbanes had stated that he would keep Elkridge residents' views in mind, but that he felt no need to deviate from the MDOT and NEPA processes. Residents explained that the impact to residents is not truly a part of any of these processes, as they only evaluates narrowly defined residential impacts. At the conclusion of the meeting, Mr. Sarbanes said that sometimes things fall through the cracks and that he felt Elkridge residents had identified a possible flaw in the process. Mr. Sarbanes said that these oversights might be something that could be addressed.
